TikTok Grants The Community Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform revealed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that nearly one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, factory-style content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

Our research shows that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The service shared that there are presently over a billion videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. Overall, in excess of 100 mn videos are added to the service daily, making AI content a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control feature in the app and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the tool include current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies require creators to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will henceforth apply an artificially created label to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is intended to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also launching a $2 million awareness program for professionals and groups to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit educational bodies specializing in educating programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to make redundant a large number of content moderators in Britain. The company is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its user protection team in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A company official stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The company reported a notable drop in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
